Traditional martial arts at United Kempo Karate Schools is based on Chinese Kempo combined with Okinawan weapons. Kempo is a proven form of self defense that works. The beauty of Kempo is the ability for it to be adaptable to each individual regardless of physical ability or handicap. You may learn more about the history of Kempo in our history page.
We believe karate should train the entire individual. To lead a martial arts way of life is to study the arts and constantly strive to better oneself. Therefore, we require all students to do well at home, school, work, and during class. Failure to perform in all areas means the student may not be able to advance in rank.
Why do we do this? A Martial Artist should be an example, a leader, not just in the martial arts, but in all aspects of their life. The poem I Am A Martial Artist by Master Karen Eden sums it up well.
Traditional Martial Arts will exercise your mind, body, and spirit. Our program will prepare you to effectively defend yourself and loved ones. Moreover, it will teach patience and the ability to learn to handle most situations without the use of force.
"I am a martial artist." I see through different eyes.
I see a bigger picture when others see grey skies.
Though many can't conceive it, I stand...facing the wind.
My bravery, not from fighting, but from my strength within.
I am a martial artist. I'll walk the extra mile.
Not because I have to, but because it's worth my while.
I know that I am different, when I stand on a crowded street.
I know the fullness of winning, I've tasted the cup of defeat.
I am a martial artist. They say I walk with ease.
Though trained for bodily harm, my intentions are for peace.
The world may come and go, but a different path I'll choose.
A path I will not stray from, no matter, win or lose.
